The sidewalk is still covered in rusted leaves when the rains come. But the crispness is gone, and the leaves are collaged to the pavement by steady beating drops that seem to have no source or ending. Darkness comes before we leave work, and my hibernation begins. It happens this way each year, but is still accompanied by the same sense of loss, intensified this year by my actual loss.
