I had the rare treat of picking up my young children from school on Friday, which inspired me to create this second collage on rag paper, called Schoolyard. I was also inspired by reading one of my favourite children’s books to my son by Ezra Jack Keats, “A Letter to Amy,” that day. This blog post features many of the books illustrations, in case you have never seen them. I would definitely like to illustrate a children’s book in this style at some point.
In each of these collages, I am using similar ripped papers, some of which I painted/created using mixed media techniques over the years, some from magazines, others are antique papers. Each collage also features some thread stitches. On this one, I made the “playground” out of coloured thread to communicate that playful jumble of monkey bars at the school.

Very interesting look Nancy. Something you need to study for awhile, or come back to several times.

This reminds me of the artist John Piper, the similarities are striking when you look at his collages.

I’ll have to look him up; haven’t heard of him before.
